According to the latest UK Job Market Report from Adzuna.co.uk, the job market hasn't looked this good for six years. Results of the report also point to almost one vacancy per job seeker (1.33). It seems the seesaw is finally tipping the other way, towards levels enjoyed before the recession hit.
It's not just in the expected areas, either: regional economies, particularly those in the north, are strengthening, and at a rapid rate. A year ago, competition, on average, was at a rate of 20 jobseekers per vacancy, but only months later, this has halved. It would appear that the north-south divide is eroding.
Manufacturing has played a significant part in the north, with new contracts and expansion naturally needing more workers to be fulfilled. The solid engineering sector and buoyancy in I.T. has seen salaries rise, which has also boosted the overall picture of the job market today. In fact, pay rises look to have been granted the length and breadth of the country – every region in England reported salary growth between April and May 2014.
Even The Wirral, reportedly the worst place to secure a job in the U.K., saw competition decrease. In May 2013, an average of 57 jobseekers chased down each vacancy, but 12 months later, this was down to 17. Conversely, in Cambridge, jobseekers have the pick of the opportunities; Adzuna.co.uk reported that there were seven vacancies to each jobseeker as the report was compiled. Unsurprisingly, unemployment has fallen as a whole, dropping from 7.8% to 6.6% in a year.
Perhaps, more than ever, recruiters need to address this competition. Will they be on a tighter rein, and feel pressured to secure the right applicant from their client organisations – who, by their nature, will be more demanding and exacting than jobseekers for results? Fewer vacancies a year ago forced jobseekers to proactively seek out agencies in order to increase their scope for opportunity; this situation looks set to change. Could it be that agencies now have to 'up the ante', with regards to proactively tracking down skilled job hunters?
It stands to reason that, should this favourable market continue down the same road, vacancies will need to compete for prominence, to tempt the talent. Competition is healthy, so we're told. Ensuring you're accessible and visible is essential, and your agency's recruitment website design is key.
