There's no doubt that it's one of the first, and main, things job seekers look for when perusing the job market, but when accepting a role post-interview, far more things can spring into play.
Whether the company looks progressive....the colleagues an applicant would work with, and how friendly and co-operative they seem; the hours of work; investment into staff training; the location and practicalities....and how flexible a company seems to be in their working practices. The pay can sometimes prove the last consideration against these particular elements, however intangible some may seem.
According to the ONS (The Office of National Statistics), home workers made up 13.9% of the workforce. That may not seem too impressive, but it was 'the highest proportion since records began in 1998'. With 1.5m people working from a home base or studio/workshop, and a further 2.7m using home as a base as they travel to clients up and down the country, the premise of 'working from home' is enjoyed by many.
However, the TUC reported that out of sight doesn't equal out of mind – they still believe too few bosses agree with home-working as a concept, worrying instead that work doesn't get done and forcing employees into the office under their watchful eye.
Technology means we can work anywhere, at any time, which suggests that this negative perception about home-workers still carries weight, otherwise more than 13.9% of workers would be doing it.
Perhaps the humble recruiter could help dispel the myth that home-working equals employees watching TV in their pyjamas all day, eating huge handfuls of Frosties from the box, whilst emails ping into their inbox by the second. Could recruiters detail the flexible working practices forward-thinking companies employ, to firms steadfastly in the dark ages? Recruiters, after all, are there in an advisory role - or would such suggestion fall outside of their responsibility to clients? What are your thoughts?
