Agencies look set for a busy year…

Poor management, overdue pay rises and a lack of career progression may be bad news for employees, but these elements look set to provide plenty of business for recruiters this year. Given that a new report has cited that one in five workers are actively looking for a new role, and that almost half the working nation are considering moving jobs this year, agencies are likely to enjoy a busy twelve months.

In the ‘Job Exodus Trends Report 2016’ a third of those surveyed actually went as far to say that they’re ‘miserable’ in their current position. One of their main gripes was unsympathetic and inept bosses.

More money - surprisingly perhaps, in our improving economy - was only the third consideration of employees looking to change jobs. Given the choice, 34% would opt for more flexibility concerning their working hours than a 3% increase in their pay.

Not feeling valued, and a lack of direction from superiors, were issues that also outweighed the desire for more money in wage packets, as well as unmanageable workloads – these issues threaten a mass exodus of the UK’s workforce, according to the report.

Said Paul Devoy, Head of Investors in People: “Improved salaries over recent months mean that pay is less of a gripe for UK workers. But longstanding issues around poor management and how valued people feel in their work continue to make UK workers miserable. Bad leadership alone costs the UK £39 billion a year.”

So how can employees feel happier and an integral part of the company they work for? According to 13% of respondents, a simple ‘thank you’ would suffice. A clear career path was of particular importance to younger workers, with over a quarter reporting this as lacking in their current role.

Whilst recruiters would undoubtedly benefit if a mass exodus was on the cards, few would agree that undervaluing staff and poor management issues should be ignored by employers. Feedback from agencies as to why staff are abandoning ship could be valuable in this regard, that is, if the company in question wants to encourage organisational and cultural change. Such practices are rarely achieved overnight, however; 2016 looks set to keep recruiters busy, whatever the outcome of these findings.
